HONORS GEOMETRY

ABOUT THE CLASS
Honors Geometry covers a full geometry curriculum and beyond. Topics include triangle congruence and similarity, complicated area and volume problems, mastering the triangle, special quadrilaterals, polygons, the art of angle chasing, construction problems, power of a point, 3-dimensional geometry, transformations, analytic geometry, and basic trigonometry.

The class is centered around geometric proofs, both written and oral.
Logical reasoning and deduction are central to understanding not only geometry, but mathematics as a whole. The ability to tell the difference between obvious mathematical concepts and ones that need to be justified is necessary to achieve a new level of understanding of math. It shows comprehension of deductive logic and the ability to structure arguments to make mathematical conclusions. All of these skills are paramount to reaching a more mature and complete knowledge of geometry and arithmetic.

WHO IS THIS CLASS FOR?
  • Students that want to go beyond the number crunching.
  • Students that want to learn the WHY behind the HOW.
  • Students that want to learn how to talk math.

DO YOU NEED THIS CLASS?
  • Yes, if you plan to skip Geometry in school.
  • Yes, if you are not satisfied with the way Geometry is taught at your school.
  • Yes, if your Geometry teacher at school is overwhelmed by distance learning and you are mostly left to study by yourself.

ARE YOU READY?
  • Did you finish Algebra 1? Then you are ready.
  • Are you taking Algebra I this year? Then let's talk before you decide if this is a right class for you.
  • If you have never formally taken Algebra I but have studied some topics here and there, let's talk to find out if you are ready for the next step.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
  • One live online class a week, 90 min with a 5 min break.
  • Small classes, maximum 6 students.
  • Weekly homework: a mix of automatically graded problems and written assignments graded by the teacher. The students should expect to spend 3-4 hours per week on doing homework.
  • Starting from the third lesson, there will be weekly presentations of written assignments.

HOW IS THIS CLASS DIFFERENT FROM ALL OTHER ONLINE CLASSES?
  • Small classes. We limit class size to 6 students, so that everybody gets instructor's attention and all questions are answered during the class.
  • Proof based. Many Geometry classes focus on getting the numerical answer, we will focus on how and why to get to that answer.
  • No multiple choice problems in the homework, except for terminology. All calculation problems will require numeric input, so there will be no way to guess without solving the problem.
  • Weekly extended response assignments will receive detailed comments and will be graded both for correctness and style. Writing math proofs is a learned skill, nobody is born with it, so we will spend time talking about what a clear, easily understandable solution looks like.
  • Weekly student presentations. Every week one of the students will present their solution to the extended response problem. The only way to lean how to talk math is by doing it.

WHAT ABOUT SCHOOL CREDIT OR ACCREDITATION?
Check with your High School. You will not get HS credit for taking this class, but many schools allow incoming students to take placement test if they wish to test out of Geometry.

PRICE?
$50 per week, invoices will be send monthly.
